"Choose Sensibly"

Fat, sugars and salt play an important role in maintaining good health. Studies show that eating less of these substances can help protect against diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes. By planning meals and snacks with less fat, sugar and salt, you will help the children in your care develop healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime.

Facts about Fat
There are different types of fat that affect your health in different ways. When you know the types of foods that contain these fats and understand food labels, you can choose more sensibly in order to make meals and snacks that are low in fat.

Use
 

The ABCs Meal and Snack Plan that you completed in Unit 2.

1) In the column "Grams of Fat per Serving", write the amount of fat in each of the foods you served.
To get this number, use:

Be sure to figure the amount of fat based on what you serve. It may be more (or less) than the serving listed on the label or in the nutrient database.

2) Total the fat for each day.

  • Assess Your Meals for Fat.
    These questions will help you figure the fat content of the foods you serve to children in your care.

  • ABCs Meal and Snack Plan Form
    Fill in your 2-day plan from Unit 2, listing each food and amount, including both the fiber and fat content for each food mentioned.
