STEM CONNECTIONS NEWS OF THE DAY
August 14, 2002
1. Team selection forms: Teachers should complete these forms and turn them in at 4 PM today. We will discuss the forms and the process this morning. Assignments will be made and the list of team members emailed by evening.
2. Fellows’ schedules: Please complete the forms that list the hours you are unavailable due to classes, etc., and turn them in today. We will need this information in making team assignments.
travel: We can pay expenses for the teachers, fellows, and faculty to
attend science education conferences. Our main objective is to present
reports on our research projects, do workshops for other teachers, etc.
However, it is a bit early for such presentations, and there are some pending
conferences of interest. We will try to support attendance at these for those
willing to report back on what they have learned. Here are some forthcoming
events; we will provide information later on how to request support.
a. New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA). Moultonboro, NH, October 4-6 (Fri-Sun). We will pay the all-inclusive two-night package heated-cabin fee for up to two fellows and two teachers.
b. Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST). Their annual meeting is in Worcester, November 6-8 (Wed-Fri). This is a good conference with many interesting sessions. We will pay the modest registration fee for any participant who wishes to attend for one or more days.
c. National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Philadelphia, March 27-30, 2003. STEM CONNECTIONS will present a session that will include some participants.
d. Massachusetts Association of Science Supervisors (MASS). Usually held in early May, this is a good place to showcase your project.
4. Research team funding: In September, each teacher will have the opportunity to apply for up to $500 to fund the classroom implementation of his or her research project, based on an implementation plan and an associated budget proposal. Additional funding will likely be distributed later on. At this time it appears that $1000 - $1200 per teacher may ultimately be available. Proposal forms will be distributed on Friday for submission later on.
