Calculus - This course was designed to give middle school teachers an understanding and a working experience with calculus. It combined the teaching of mathematics pedagogy with the content of calculus and was consistent with the NCTM Standards and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Objectives included to:
- Offer content courses to middle school mathematics teachers
- Integrate the teaching of mathematics with the content of functions, their combinations, exponential and logarithms, trigonometry, limits, derivatives and anti-derivatives, and applications.
- Investigate connections between theory and real life applications and between calculus at the college level and calculus related ideas in the middle school mathematics curriculum.
- Use technology in the form of TI-83 Plus graphing calculators and the Internet or Geometer’s Sketchpad..
- Integrate the history of mathematics into the course by placing selected topics in their historical context.
- Create grade appropriate lesson plans with calculus and present them during the follow-ups.
