Proposal for Implementing Technology into Teaching
Exciting Parts of Speech
Problem Statement: One expectation of the Massachusetts Frameworks for sixth grade students is that they have a working understanding of a number of different parts of speech. The study of parts of speech, as it is presented in our textbooks, is mind numbingly dull. I propose to incorporate the use of digital photographs taken by the students to use in a presentation explaining various parts of speech.
Motivation: With this approach students will be engaged in the learning process and increase their understanding of this part of the study of grammar. Students will also be meeting several of the district technology goals.
Approach: Prior to starting this project students will take a brief survey assessing their knowledge of parts of speech. As an introduction, students will watch a sample power point presentation on prepositions made and presented by the teacher. Students will then work with a partner and brainstorm how to best explain the part of speech they have chosen. Students will use the digital camera to create a power point presentation, which they will show to the class. After the project is completed students will take a follow-up survey.
Results : Hopefully, the pre and post-surveys will demonstrate an increased knowledge of parts of speech. Also, students will be enthusiastically engaged in a topic not known to hold their attention using traditional materials.
Conclusion: If successful, this approach could be used for a wide variety of topics in the Social Studies and Language Arts classes that I teach. Also, when students assume the role of teaching others about a subject, they need to understand it thoroughly themselves. Finally, the power point presentations on parts of speech that the students have produced can be saved and shown to other classes.
