Alternative_assessment Worksheets constitute a form of assessment because if a significant number of students don't get it, the instructor can revisit the topic, so students are not left behind.
Course_description This course is intended for students who want to learn matematical techniques required for upper division Physics and other science courses. After each set of homework is due, students are given a worksheet which contains the essence of that chapter and asked to work on it in groups of 3. The instructor roams around to see if some groups are stuck and need help to get started. They are encouraged to discuss their solutions, which are graded on a coarse scale, so attendance counts heavily. After 2/3 of the course, ove 80% are doing the HW and worksheets consistently. Exam scores average around 75% for the individual and 80% counting the group and extra credit HW.

Course_description The major goal of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills of organic chemistry without the fear and trembling usually associated with organic. Homework sets are grade with the ability to redo incorrect answers for additional points. Group work increases the retention and understanding of the material. The labs are done in groups and closely follow the course material. The process of learning and teaching is addressed to increase the ownership of the course by the students.

Inquiry_attributes This is a laboratory course and all the experiments develop a specific concept. Several of the experimental modules are connected in the sense that a series of experimental techniques are used over several class periods to achieve a final result. Techniques that are introduced in the first part of the course are utilized again later. In this way students develop confidence by revisting concepts and techniques.
Group_based All experiments are performed in pairs. "Pyramid Exams" incorportate group problem solving. Electronic homework develops quantitative skills and group work is encouraged.
Alternative_assessment Quizzes are short/extended answer questions and quantitative word problems, data analysis. Laboratory write ups require data analysis and develop writing skills.
