2000-2001 Teaching Scholar Award Information


Nominate a future math or science teacher for an award!

Our primary means of identifying talented NSF/STEMTEC Teaching Scholars begins with nominations from K-12 teachers and faculty participating in the STEMTEC program.  The Teaching Scholars Program was established to support students who are preparing to become K-12 teachers with a concentration in math or science education.  In addition, we are looking for students who will be leaders in their fields, who will mentor other students, who appreciate efforts to create quality math and science curricula, and who wish to be engaged in and challenged by new pedagogic practices. One of the goals of the Teaching Scholars Program is to increase the number of mathematics and science teachers from traditionally underrepresented groups, and students from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.  However, awards are available to all qualified candidates, regardless of ethnicity/race. The characteristics we are seeking are not always easily identifiable, and we are relying on participating teachers and faculty to participate in the nomination process.


Who can make a nomination?

College and K-12 faculty members from schools and school districts involved with the STEMTEC program are invited to nominate qualified candidates.


Who is eligible?

Applicants for the Teaching Scholarship must be enrolled in, or anticipate being enrolled in, one of the schools in the eight-college collaborative (Amherst College, Greenfield Community College, Hampshire College, Holyoke Community College, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield Technical Community College, or the University of Massachusetts at Amherst).  They must be able to demonstrate a concentration in mathematics, science, or engineering. Eligible students must have an interest in teaching science or mathematics in middle or high school, or in teaching elementary school with a strong background in science or mathematics.  Students must be enrolled at least half-time during the award period. Undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students are eligible.  The NSF requires U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.


What are the scholarship awards?

Students who receive awards from the program will be designated NSF/STEMTEC Teaching Scholars.  The awards range from $1,000 - $5,000 and will be paid over a one or two academic year period, depending on the award received.  Some of the scholar awards will allow for students to reapply for consideration in subsequent years.  In addition to the monetary award, Teaching Scholars will have various support services available to aid them in their teaching career goals, including advising, mentors, and other STEMTEC and campus based information resources.


How does one nominate a candidate?

To nominate a Teaching Scholar candidate, complete the attached Nomination Form. The nominees will then be asked to complete an application, which will include a short essay on career goals, transcripts, and letters of reference.  The Teaching Scholars Committee will evaluate the application materials. There may be interviews for the finalists, by phone or in person.  Teacher Scholar award recipients will be notified of the award as soon as decisions are made and they will be invited to an awards banquet.
