District-Based Certification

If you have a bachelors degree in science or mathematics but have not fulfilled the education requirements for teacher certification, one certification option is the district-based certification program in Springfield, MA.  This program hires provisionally certified or certifiable candidates for open teaching positions in the district.  Through the Springfield professional development program, the district provides the necessary coursework  (at their cost) for these provisionally certified teachers to receive provisional certification with advanced standing within a four or five year period.  Candidates accepted into this program are provided with mentors and other support services.  Most of the candidates accepted by this program teach in areas where there is a shortage of teachers such as secondary math and science.
